Frances Gregory

Mezzo-soprano

INTRODUCTION

Praised for her “idiomatic and stylish singing” (The Telegraph) British mezzo-soprano Frances Gregory is an alumna of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment\s Rising Stars Scheme, with whom she sang Elgar’s Sea Pictures conducted by Dinis Sousa.

Highlights of her 2025 / 2026 season include Hansel Hansel and Gretel and Cherubino Le nozze di Figaro for Opera North, Idamante Idomeneo for Chelsea Opera Group, Luna Tales Untapped: A Rotherham Opera for London’s Royal Ballet & Opera, L’Enfance du Christ with Cambridge Philharmonic Society and Messiah with Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. For Buxton International Festival, she will sing both Annio La clemenza di Tito and Flora Bervoix La traviata.

In Summer 2024, she created Ellie Gifford in the premiere of Paul Carr’s Under the Greenwood Tree for Dorset Opera Festival and her recent engagements have further included Proserpine / Aréthuse La descente d’Orphée aux Enfers with Vache Baroque at Buxton International Festival, Arnalta L’Incoronazione di Poppea with The English Concert and, with La Nuova Musica, at The Grange Festival, Cherubino Le nozze di Figaro for The Mozartists, Dido Dido and Aeneas for Eboracum Baroque, Cambridge, Alcandro in Pergolesi’s L’Olimpiade for Vache Baroque, J. S. Bach B Minor Mass and Second Harlot Solomon with The Gabrieli Consort, Mary L’Enfance du Christ with NFM Wroclaw Philharmonic, Messiah with The Ulster Consort, The Dream of Gerontius in Truro Cathedral, Mozart Requiem at the St Endellion Festival and Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music with Outcry Ensemble at Smith Square Hall.

She was a Studio Artist at Opéra national de Lyon, an Alvarez Young Artist at Garsington Opera at Wormsley (where she covered and performed Flamel Fantasio) and an Emerging Artist at Longborough Festival Opera (singing Fox The Cunning Little Vixen). She created the role of Laura in Tom Coult’s Violet for the opening of the 2022 Aldeburgh Festival, with further performances at Buxton International Festival and Hackney Empire. The production was a collaboration between Britten Pears Arts and Music Theatre Wales, in association with The Royal Opera, and was subsequently nominated for an Independent Opera and UK Achievement in Theatre Award.

Her operatic engagements have further included Nancy Albert Herring for Clonter Opera, Claudio Silla for Northern Opera Group, Egeo Teseo at London Handel Festival, La Messaggera / Proserpina L’Orfeo for Longborough Festival Opera, Apsara (also covering La Messaggera) in Orpheus, an innovative re-imagining of Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo for Opera North and Philip Venables’ Denis & Katya with Music Theatre Wales. For her performance as Sycorax in Jeremy Sama’s pastiche The Enchanted Island, she was awarded the Dame Hilda Brackett Award from Sadler’s Wells.

A graduate of London’s Royal Academy of Music, where her roles for Royal Academy Opera included Minskwoman Flight, Juno Semele and Laura Iolanta she was a Karaviotis scholar, Winner of the RAM Club Prize and Tom Hammond Opera prize, a RAM / Kohn Foundation Bach Cantata soloist and a member of the Academy’s prestigious Song Circle, with whom she made her Wigmore Hall debut performing Carl Loewe’s Balladen.
