Jorge Navarro Colorado
Winner of a 2017 Auditon Oracle Scholarship, a 2016 Gil – Rodriguez Scholarship from Opéra de Baugé and of the tenor prize at BecaBach 2015 in Barcelona, Jorge Navarro Colorado, who graduated from the Opera Course of the Guildhall School of Music, is a Britten-Pears Alumnus and a Samling Artist.
Engagements in 2021 / 2022 include Damon Acis and Galatea with the Early Opera Company at Iford Arts, Lurcanio Ariodante at the Göttingen Festival, Petrus Brockes Passion at the Opernhaus Halle and Dionisio Fernando with Opera Settecento. With Gothenburg Baroque, he sings J. S. Bach Arias on tour and Christmas Cantatas by Homilius, whilst for the 2021 London Handel Festival, he appears in Messiah Reimagined with the London Handel Orchestra and Arias for Annibale ‘Ballino’ Pio Fabri with Opera Settecento.
Recent engagements have included Damon Acis and Galatea with the Early Opera Company at the Buxton Festival, Eliates in Keiser’s Crésus on tour with Ensemble Diderot, Alessandro in Telemann’s Cleofida with Il Gusto Barocco, J. S. Bach’s Magnificat with Vespres d’Arnadí, J. S. Bach Arias on tour with Gothenburg Baroque, de Falla’s El retablo de maese Pedro with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Messiah with Bach Collegium Barcelona.
He made his debut at the Göttingen Festival as Berengario Lotario, a performance of which The Arts Desk wrote, “Jorge Navarro Colorado gave us a breathtaking virtuoso display,” and returned to sing Giuliano Rodrigo. Both performances are available on Accent CD. Operatic engagements have further included the title role in Carissimi’s Jonas for English Touring Opera, Damon Acis and Galatea at the London Handel Festival, Handel Alexander’s Feast with the Haydn Chamber Orchestra, Emilio Partenope for Iford Arts, Tempo Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno for the Académie de musique ancienne 2018 at the Festival de Périgord Noir and at the Theater Aachen, Apollo L’Orfeo for Gothenburg Baroque, Don Ottavio Don Giovanni for HeadFirst Productions, Settimio in Porpora’s L’Agrippina for Barber Opera and Gualtiero in Vivaldi’s Griselda for Irish National Opera.

Bach Easter Oratorio with the Israel Camerata, the St John Passion at St John’s, Smith Square, Ton Koopman’s reconstruction of J. S. Bach St Mark Passion with the BZM Ensemble, Barcelona, Blow Venus and Adonis with the New London Consort, Britten Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings with the Israel Chamber Orchestra, Britten St Nicolas with the Capilla de Música Santa María del Coro, San Sebastián, Handel Esther and Purcell Fairest Isle with the Irish Baroque Orchestra, Haydn Stabat Mater, Mozart Missa Brevis in G and Vesperae Solemnes de Dominica with the Polski Chór Kameralny, Messiah with the London Festival Orchestra, Mozart Requiem with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Circles within Circles: The Life and Friendships of William Busch at the 2018 London Song Festival and a recital to commemorate the death of Benjamin Britten at the Ciclo de Lied de Santiago.
He has worked with conductors included John Andrews, David Angus, Renato Balsadonna, Ryan Bancroft, Stephen Barlow, Avner Biron, Kolja Blacher, Christopher Bucknall, William Christie, Ronald Corp, Laurence Cummings, Christian Curnyn, Magnus Kjellson, Jan Łukaszewski, Gianluca Marcianò, Iñaki Encida Oyón, Timothy Redmond and Peter Whelan.
Jorge Navarro Colorado’s broadcasts include de Falla’s El retablo de Maese Pedro with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Vivaldi’s Griselda and In Tune for BBC Radio 3. His recordings further include German Cantatas with Solo Violin with Ensemble Diderot on Audax Records CD (Nominated for a 2019 International Classical Music Award) and Josquin des Prez: Mille Regrez for English Touring Opera’s Spring 2021 Digital Season.

“Among the men, tenor Jorge Navarro Colorado presents a Giuliano, initially successful as a soldier, then as a brother and rebel, and finally a wily winner of his territory. Tall of stature, his gestures are well-controlled and his stage presence (already noted in the 2017 production of Lotario at Göttingen) is mesmerising. His diction is clear and precise, and his easy projection gives him a noble panache. His vocal production remains very flexible, including when he is engaged in violent acts and: his “Stragi, morti,” whose ambitious ornaments are taken up by the oboes, while he overturns the sofa and breaks the furniture, resonates as one of the strongest moments of the performance, an impressive dramatic and vocal number, deserving our applause. Let us also not forget his enchanting “Fra le spine” at the beginning of the second act, and the brilliant panache of his “Spirti fieri,” which opens the third act.”
